Virginia, now know as the Commonwealth of Virginia, was established by English colonist in 1607 in Jamestown.
The colonist found that tobacoo was a profitable item therefore importing African Americans for slavery. Virginia was one of the original thirteen colonies. Virginia wa reluctant to give up slavery and Virginia became a major battlefield during the American Civil War.
