About Roanoke, Virginia..... AKA..... The Star City

Roanoke was first named Big Lick in 1852.  The name Big Lick came from the large outcropping of salt.  In 1882 Big Lick became Roanoke and was chartered as the independent city of Roanoke in 1884. 
The Roanoke Star, also known as the Mill Mountain Star, is the world's largest freestanding illuminated man-made star, constructed in 1949 at the top of Mill Mountain in Roanoke, Virginia.

Roanoke is nestled in a valley just west of the Blue Ridge Mountains and can be viewed via the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The Blue Ridge Parkway is about a 469 miles scenic highway.  Here are a few items of intrest regarding The Blue Ridge Parkway:
