Equality Virginia is a statewide, non-partisan lobbying, education and support network for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and straight allied (GLBT) communities in Virginia.

Equality Virginia seeks equality for all Virginians by: (1) lobbying the General Assembly; (2) organizing communities; and (3) educating the public.

The National Equality March on Washington, DC is set for the weekend of October 10-11, 2009.  The goal of the march is to assemble a group of folks representing each of the 435 congressional districts in the nation.  The purpose of this goal is for people at the local level to come together, be empowered, and return home more able to continue our shared work for equality in our own communities.

In this spirit, Equality Virginia is also hoping to see a contingency of folks from each of Virginia's 11 congressional districts in attendance and we want to help people connect and organize for this special event.

  • If you are interested in going and would like to connect with other interested people in your area...
  • OR, if you've already started organizing a group in your community and would like for Equality Virginia to direct other interested local people to you...

Please contact Charles Dyson at cdyson@equalityvirginia.org.

For more information about the march, or to RSVP to the national organizers of the march, please visit the official site of Equality Across America

 Equality Virginia Advocates has a lot going on this summer.  The process of drafting proposed legislation for the coming 2010 General Assembly session has already begun and we'll be sending more information on our progress soon!

In the meantime, we wanted to fill you in on some of the other changes, things we're working on, and ways that you can get involved right now.  Below you'll find information on:
  • Writing letters to the editor
  • Our name change
  • NOVA "Mint Julep" Party
  • Volunteering to host your own house party

1) Letters to the Editor.

One important thing you can do to help Equality Virginia Advocates' advocacy work during the summer is to write a letter to the editor of your local paper supporting our work to pass legislation protecting GLBT people from workplace discrimination.

These letters can have a huge impact.  One recent letter to the editor from an EV member convinced the Roanoke Times Editorial Board to take a stand in support of workplace non-discrimination legislation.  To read Tuesday's editorial in the Roanoke Times,

For more information about writing letters to the editor, please contact the EV office at 804-643-4816 or info@equalityvirginia.org.

2) We renamed our organizations.

Since much of what we do is educational, "Equality Virginia" is now the name for our tax-deductible education work (this was formerly Equality Virginia Education Fund), and our advocacy
organization is now called "Equality Virginia Advocates."  Our political action committee will continue to be "Equality Virginia PAC."

As has been the case in the past, you can support our work by
designating your contributions to any of our three organizations:

  • Contributions to Equality Virginia will support our education,
    research and public awareness activities and are tax-deductible to the
    full extent of the law;

  • Contributions to Equality Virginia Advocates will support our
    advocacy work, including our work to pass legislation that will end
    discrimination in employment, and are not tax deductible;
  • Contributions to Equality Virginia PAC will support our work to
    elect fair minded people to the Virginia legislature and out gay
    candidates to local office.

4) Upcoming "Mint Julep" event in NOVA.

Equality Virginia Advocates has several events planned in the next few months.  The next one we'd like to highlight is the Mint Julep party in northern Virginia.

The Mint Julep Party, benefiting Equality Virginia Advocates, will be held on Saturday, July 25th from 6 to 9pm in Alexandria, VA. Please join the hosts and sponsors for a fun evening as we socialize and hear about legislation EVA is preparing for the 2010 General Assembly Session. Regular tickets are $40 and patron tickets are $100. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be served. For more information and to purchase tickets for the event, please
click here.

5) Like hosting parties?  Then we want you!

If you'd like to help further, consider hosting a house party for friends and supporters in your area for Equality Virginia Advocates. It is a fun and easy way to raise important funds so Equality Virginia Advocates can continue important legislative work. It's also a great way to educate others about important issues in Virginia. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Mardi at the EV office at
mkrantz@equalityvirginia.org or 804.643.4816.
