New Pastor for local church*..
Rev. Dr. Tyrone P. Sweeting Jr. is presently serving in the position of Interim Pastor of Metropolitan Community Church of the Blue Ridge.
Tyrone (Ty) Sweeting enrolled in Andrew College in Cuthbert, GA, receiving his A.S. in June 1985. As a result of his studies at Andrew College, Ty was listed in the 1986 edition of Who*s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. Ty then received a Phi Theta Kappa academic scholarship to attend Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL, receiving his B.A. in Communications in 1987. He received his M.A. in Pastoral Ministry in 1990 from St. Thomas University in Miami, FL. During this time, Ty also completed his internship at Sunshine Cathedral MCC in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
Ty has also served as Assistant Pastor of MCC Key West, FL., founding Pastor of MCC Lafayette, Louisiana and as Senior Pastor of MCC at Boise, in Boise, Idaho. During his Pastorate in Boise, Ty wrote a religious column for two Idaho newspapers. He wrote for the Idaho Statesman, Idaho*s largest newspaper in circulation and the LGBT publication Diversity.
While in Boise, Rev. Ty became actively involved in the cause of human rights, working closely with the interfaith group Idaho Voices of Faith for Human Rights. Rev Ty was honored for this work at the 1995 United Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Church*s General Conference in Atlanta receiving awards from both the Fellowship and the UFMCC Ministry of Social Justice for his work to help defeat the infamous Proposition One, a heinous anti-gay/lesbian ballot initiative put forth by a group calling itself the Idaho Citizens Alliance. Additionally, Rev. Ty was presented with The Maple Award from The Community Center in Boise, Idaho known as the City of Trees, as one *who inspires achievement in others.*
Ty was then called to pastor the Church of Our Savior MCC in 1996 where he led them to purchase their permanent church home in Boynton Beach, FL, also designing the church*s lovely stained glass windows. In January 1999, Under Rev. Ty*s careful guidance, they began a television ministry on Comcast Cable in Palm Beach County, FL., which ran for 2 years.
In February, 1999, Rev. Ty was selected by the prestigious International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England, to be listed in their book, 2000 Outstanding Scholars of the 20th Century. During this time, Ty began pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Florida Center for Theological Studies in Miami, FL from which he graduated in May 2008.
After leaving Boynton Beach, Ty then served as the pastor of The Rock MCC in Chattangooa, TN.
Prior to arriving at MCC of the Blue Ridge, Ty was the Interim Pastor of Divine Peace MCC in Pontiac, MI. Rev. Ty arrived at MCC of the Blue Ridge in April of 2008.
As Rev. Ty becomes involved with Southwest Virginia*s LGBT community he seeks to raise awareness about social justice and share in the good news that God loves all people.
